UMD’s Anderson, Stanford deny hiring reports

UPDATE (11:25 A.M., July 17) – The San Francisco Chronicle reports a Stanford spokeswoman has denied that Anderson is in talks to take over the university’s athletic department. However, the paper still maintains that sources said Anderson was in talks to return to Stanford, where he was formerly an athletic fundraiser.

UPDATE (9:30 P.M.) - Anderson, in a statement, denied the reports he’s on his way to Stanford.

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that University of Maryland Athletic Director Kevin Anderson is leaving Maryland’s flagship university to take the same position at Stanford University.

The news comes two years after Anderson took over from Debbie Yow, who went to lead North Carolina State’s athletic program. Anderson had a five-year contract with Maryland. His tenure has been marred with controversy, including the firing of former football coach Ralph Friedgen and the elimination of seven varsity athletic teams.
